8 Ways to Celebrate International Women’s Day

On March 8th, people all over the world will celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). Women raise families, run businesses, lead their communities, create beautiful art, and so much more. This annual holiday highlights all the amazing things women do every single day.

Society sets unrealistic standards for women. It tries to tell us how we should behave, what we should do, and how we should look. But no two women are the same!

IWD’s theme for 2020 is #EachForEqual, because we can all individually stand up for equality and create a better world. So instead of trying to make ourselves into the perfect image of what society wants a woman to be, we should celebrate our differences. Embrace what makes you uniquely you and help empower others.

So let’s all lift a glass of rosé to the badass women in our lives. Here are 8 ways that you can celebrate International Women’s Day!

  • Call your mom (or grandma, sister, or aunt). Take a few minutes to thank the women who raised you. Don’t forget that family comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether they’re your biological, adopted, or chosen family they helped to make you the amazing person you are today.
  • Volunteer or donate to a cause you believe in. There are tons of deserving charities that help girls and women around the world. Find a cause you love and send some love their way. My favorite is Choices for Victims of Domestic Violence (It’s a safe house for women based in Columbus, Ohio.)

  • Text your best friend. They’ve been by your side through thick and thin. Do you really need another reason to text them and show how much you care?

  • Treat your body to a self-care session. Your body does so much for you. It deserves a little love too! Take a long walk, get a massage, or indulge in a long yoga session to say thanks.

  • Post on social media. Share your story with friends and family. Use IWD’s 2020 hashtag #EachForEqual or #NormalizeNormalBodies to show off your individuality.

  • Get inspired. I love reading books about people and causes who have changed the world. I also love this playlist of TedTalks by revolutionary women. They make me feel like I can handle anything and everything! I also love Listening to Shame by Brene Brown and Plus Size? More Like My Size by Ashley Brown.

  • Support women-owned businesses. Find businesses in your community that are run by women and support their work! One of my favorite women-owned businesses is LONDRE Bodywear which makes swimwear out of recycled water bottles. You can get 10% off your order with the code LONDRELOVESMIK.

  • Invest in yourself. Have you been procrastinating on joining that professional organization that could change your career? Waiting for the “right time” to attend a personal development event like the Dear Body Conference? Putting off learning a new skill? Do it today! You’ll only regret not doing it sooner.

No matter how you celebrate International Women’s Day, I hope you surround yourself with people who lift you up and make you feel your best.
